The issues of the current state and trends of the most dynamically developing area of ​​energy – energy based on the use of renewable sources are considered. It is shown that the driving forces forcing states to develop renewable energy sources is the need to ensure resource security, energy and environmental security. The world experience of legislative work to support the development of RES, as well as the legislative framework in the field of RES, adopted in Russia recently, is analyzed in detail.
